As an eyepiece is placed and removed from your face under normal conditions, the stress points of the frame tend to occur at the hinges. As a spectacle wearer, you will know how easy it is to damage a frame at the hinge.

Hinges with screws are standard joints where a screw is placed to hold the arm and frame perpendicularly.

Hinges without screws are where the arm and frame are made from one complete moulding. As such, it allows the arm of a frame to be extremely thin as there is no screw at the joint.

Spring Joints are specially designed hinges (with or without a screw?) that allow a frame to open at a greater angle then normal. The stress points of a frame are thus reduced during daily wear.
