About the Brand - Dior History

As Christian Dior once said himself, “deep in every heart slumbers a dream.” Throughout his life, the French fashion designer ensured that his dreams became reality, transporting fans of his creations into DIOR dream worlds. At the beginning of his journey, however, things were very different. After all, the shy designer, who detested large crowds, didn't initially want to turn his hobby into a profession. Indeed, his first passion was art. Together with a friend, he opened a gallery in Paris in 1928, but it soon had to close its doors again due to the world economic crisis.

Born out of necessity, Dior began to earn a living by sketching for the milliner Madame Agnès and the magazine Le Figaro Illustré. His drawings were so great that they caught the attention of designer Robert Piquet, who hired him from 1938 onwards. Dior then moved to Lelong two years later. But before his big breakthrough, World War II threw a spanner in the works and forced him to flee to the south of France.

The designer's rise to the centre of the fashion industry was not long in coming after the end of the war. Thanks to the support of industrialist Marcel Boussac, Dior founded his eponymous fashion house in 1946 and quickly made a name for himself thanks to his completely new designs. Short jackets, tight-fitting waste lines and wide skirts were the focus of his first collections and not only brought new energy after the war years, but created a "new look" that made him a favourite with the stars.

The rapid success led to Dior exploring new ground for his seemingly never-ending creativity. In the same year, the perfume "Miss Dior" was launched and in 1948 Christian Dior New York Inc. was born. Nylon stockings, made-to-measure shoes and costume jewellery found their way into the shops alongside haute couture and quickly enjoyed the same popularity as Dior was accustomed to from his fashion designs on the catwalks of the fashion capitals.

After ten years in the limelight and at the height of his career, the most influential designer of the 50s died due to a sudden heart attack in 1957. Nevertheless, the magic of his label lived on, not least thanks to designer icons such as Yves Saint Laurent, Gianfranco Ferré or John Galliano, who ensured that Dior continued to have a major say in the market and internalised Christian Dior's motto: "The secret of elegance lies in the simplicity of things."

In particular, the Dior sunglasses and glasses came to be seen as luxurious classics with a vintage touch and anyone who was anyone had at least one model by the brand in their glasses cabinet. This has not changed to this day. It is not only the name and unmistakable CD logo, but above all the colours, materials and workmanship that make the frames stand out from other brands. Dior's designs capture exactly what fashion is supposed to capture according to Christian Dior's ideas: "Joie de vivre is the secret of beauty. There is no beauty that is attractive without joie de vivre."
