About Thom Browne

From early beginnings as a salesman in New York City to a world-wide success and recognition, Thom Browne has proved himself time and time again as a talented fashion designer and now offers a range of unique designs, from tailored suits and accessories to Thom Browne glasses and Thom Browne sunglasses for men. Read on to find out more about the brand and its unique eyewear designs.

The Pulse of the Big City

Thom Browne's life could well be considered the epitome of the search for the American dream. Born in the US state of Pennsylvania in 1965, he never really felt at home. Instead, he set out to live his dream rather than inherit his family's law practice. The first step was to study business at the prestigious University of Notre Dame. But even Indiana was too small for him to live out his creativity, so Browne tried his hand at acting in Los Angeles with dubious success.

Nevertheless, the City of Angels was not just a stopover, but rather the place where Browne found his calling. It was here that he began to act out his penchant for fashion, buying clothes from thrift stores and re-cutting them to wear himself. Restless, both spiritually and geographically, he didn't find fulfillment in LA either, so Thom Brown moved back to New York City in 1997. One milestone in the life of the then 32-year-old was when he landed a job in the sales department of Giorgio Armani. His real American Dream, however, did not manifest itself until two years later, when he found employment as a men's fashion designer with Club Monaco, despite his lack of training in the fashion industry.

Natural Talent with a Big Dream

His natural talent didn't go unnoticed by anyone, so New York tailor Rocco Ciccarelli sought to collaborate with him. The result: five grey men's suits that Browne sold to friends and acquaintances. From the proceeds and borrowed money, he rented a showroom in Manhattan's then-dubious Meatpacking District and, by 2003, had designed a menswear collection of shirts, sweaters and sweatshirts in the top price segment. His creations had recognition value due to slim and short cuts. His blazers ended well above the wrists and his pants left bare ankles in plain view. Despite the focus on suits, the designer manages to show skin and also likes to appear in suit shorts from time to time.

Nevertheless, it can be said that most of the designs that come from the pen of Thom Browne are rather on the classic side. The garments are made of cotton or wool (preferably merino wool). The official trademark of the Thom Browne brand consists of three-colour stripes in red, white and blue. These stripes are often used decoratively in jackets, where they are attached as tabs. However, a striped hoodie, t-shirts and accessories can also have elements with these colours.

Thom Browne Eyewear - Stripes for Life

Thom Browne glasses also bear the trademark stripes at the temple end of each model. It doesn't matter how colourful the Thom Browne prescription glasses are, the red-white-blue stripes on the temple tip are never missing. Each Thom Browne collection features unique models by the New York fashion designer.

For those looking for a timeless model suitable for all occasions, opt for frames in gold, silver or tortoiseshell brown. Thom Browne also offers a range of glasses shapes from retro styles like browline and aviator to classic style like square and round frames. As a general rule of thumb, if you have a round face opt for a more angular frame and vice versa - this will help to give your face balance and help you look and feel your best in your new pair of Thom Browne specs!
