The story of Edel-Optics: from 2009 to today
The idea was born in London: that is where Dennis Martens from Hamburg and a partner founded the online optician London Eyewear Ltd in 2005. In early 2009, Edeloptics GmbH followed in Hamburg, set up together with his school friend Tomislav Karajica. The goal: to take the trip to the optician online, first with sunglasses, then with prescription glasses too.
An in-house shop system for many languages, currencies and tax rates made it possible to expand abroad early on. The first international shops launched in the very year the company was founded. In 2011, the first bricks-and-mortar shop opened in Hamburg. Edel-Optics also became known through collaborations such as the JB by Jérôme Boateng eyewear collection from 2016, its sponsorship of the Hamburg Towers basketball team at the edel-optics.de Arena in Wilhelmsburg, and its own brand VOOY, which launched in 2020 with the VOOY x deluxe collection, created together with Hamburg rapper Samy Deluxe. In 2019, Edel-Optics celebrated its tenth anniversary under the motto “SEE AND BE SEEN”.
In April 2024, the two family businesses Optiker Bode from Hamburg and ROTTLER Brillen + Hörgeräte from the Sauerland region took over Edel-Optics. Since then, Edel-Optics has been an independent company under their umbrella, with Andreas Korsus as managing director. Instead of its own shops, in-store service in Germany is now provided in the Bode and ROTTLER branches.
In-store service in Germany: around 200 Optiker Bode and ROTTLER branches
An online optician can do a lot, but glasses also have to fit properly. That is why, if you are in Germany, you can take your Edel-Optics order to an Optiker Bode or ROTTLER branch. There you get the following free of charge:
- Eye test: You can have your eyes tested in the branch, with or without an order.
- Fitting and small repairs: The opticians in the branch adjust your glasses and help with little things like nose pads or screws.
Optiker Bode is mainly found in northern Germany, ROTTLER has over 100 branches across large parts of Germany. For customers in the UK, our service runs online. You can read how that works below.
Fast delivery: our warehouse and shipping
We ship most glasses and sunglasses straight from our own warehouse. Around 150,000 pieces are ready to go there, 23,500 models and colours from 191 brands (as of October 2026). That is why things usually move quickly:
- On its way fast: Half of all orders for in-stock items are on their way to you in less than 12 hours. 96 out of 100 leave our warehouse by the next working day at the latest.
- Reliable: Within two working days, more than 99 out of 100 orders for in-stock items have been shipped.
- Honest about longer delivery times: If a model is not in stock, we order it for you from the manufacturer or its authorised distributor. You can see how long that takes on the product page before you buy. More than 85 out of 100 orders without prescription lenses contain in-stock items only.
- Prescription glasses: The lenses are made and fitted for you. This takes a little longer; you can see the delivery time during checkout.
- Free delivery: Standard delivery to the UK is free. So far in 2026, we have delivered to 35 countries.
How we counted: orders in all our online shops from January to September 2026 without prescription lenses, measured from the order or receipt of payment until handover to the parcel service.
Online service: quick answers and plenty you can do yourself
Getting a quick answer: When you write to us, you now get a reply within one day for more than 9 out of 10 enquiries (as of October 2026). Three years ago, that was only the case for 7 out of 10. Our AI assistant answers simple questions, such as where your order is right now, straight away. Our customer service team takes care of everything else and usually gets back to you the same day.
