What are the eyewear trends for 2021? You don’t need a magic crystal ball to find the answer. We scanned the catwalks of the recently concluded fashion weeks in Milan, Paris, London and New York to determine the ultimate must-haves of the year. In this blog post, you can find out which sunglasses are on-trend and which ones you can safely stow away until another time.
It-Piece Eyewear
Glasses and most of all sunglasses have long been established as fashion accessories, perfectly complimenting the fashion trends on the catwalk. Many star designers even have their own eyewear line matching the current styles of the season. But which sunglasses and glasses are on-trend in 2021?
Firstly, not soooo many things have changed compared to last year’s fashion trends. But as always in fashion, the devil is in the details – fashion icons and influencers know that. Fashion lovers can immediately tell which models are from the previous season. Of course, it’s much more important to find your own style and feel good in your skin rather than always buying everything according to the latest craze. But a little fashion inspiration is also helpful from time to time. Our guide to the eyewear trends of 2021 is therefore a collection of tips to help you find out which new models can elevate your style to the best possible level.

Still on Trend: Retro Look and Aviator Glasses
The retro vibes are here to stay and, in 2021, will continue to bring us oversize retro eyewear with a hippy flair in white and cream tones, as well as round frames. Aviator frames, an eternal classic among sunglasses anyway, are also a popular choice for both summer and winter looks this year. However, not with mirrored lenses, but primarily in bright colours like this pair by Tom Ford, with colourful tints or colour gradients. Modern-retro is the key term. By the way, read our blog post here for more information on who looks good in aviator glasses like the Ray Ban Aviator and where the name actually comes from.

Go Big or Go Home
Colour is a huge trend in this year. 2021 will be a veritable feast of frame colours, whether glossy, matt, opaque or transparent. The fun will be complemented by coloured lenses – red and orange tones are especially popular, but also green, pink or blue, like this pair at Prada. If you want something particularly eye-catching, go for big, even chunky acetate frames. However, you should be able to wear these eye-catchers with confidence.

Natural Beauty
Those who don’t like bright colours will love the eyewear trend of flattering cream, powder and neutral shades, even in transparent styles. Frames with trendy havana and tortoiseshell prints, such as this pair by Max Mara, also adapt perfectly to the complexion and have the added advantage that they never really go out of fashion.

Small is the New Big
There’s no trend without a counter-trend: as the antithesis to the (still very on-trend) oversized frames are frames with small lenses, which also fit in perfectly with the returning grunge style. This season, however, the rimless version á la “Matrix” is making way for models with thick black rims in a cat-eye shape. These narrow cat-eye sunglasses, mostly with black acetate frames, can be found at almost all renowned designers, including Valentino, and are one of the mega fashion trends of 2021.
The new ultra-slim glasses go one step further than this: slim metal frames were already in-fashion in 2020, but this year the gossamer-thin, very light eyewear models in gold, silver or black have been slimmed down even further and are incredibly delicate.

Architectural Angularity
Our final sunglasses trend 2021 is linked to the oversize style. Glasses frames in geometric forms have long been high up on the must-have list, but in 2021, the angular sunglasses in square, triangular or hexagon shapes are getting a fashionable update, as they become bigger, more extreme, and more striking. This style is not for the faint-hearted, but will guarantee your look has the it-factor.
