It’s hard to believe, but Black Friday has only been around in the UK for roughly 10 years. And who brought the discount party to this country? American-owned retailers like Amazon, of course, who else. By Black Friday 2021, practically all Brits know about the promotion day and plan to shop on that day. What is Black Friday?
In the USA, Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving. In the States, Thanksgiving is one of the most important celebrations of the year. Families traditionally get together on the fourth Thursday in November for turkey, pumpkin and cornbread. Most Americans use the following Friday as a bridge day to shop for the first Christmas presents.
Where does the name Black Friday come from?
There are various stories about the origin of the term Black Friday. Some claim that the name comes from the fact that retailers have black fingers from counting money on the evening of this day. Others claim that it comes from the fact that the crowds that gather on the streets in front of the shopping centres look like a black anthill from afar. Or does the name perhaps come from the fact that this high-turnover day gives the traders the chance to finally write black figures in their books instead of a red minus? Any of these could be plausible.
Regardless of where this day got its name, for some years now you can find great bargains around Black Friday. The best thing to do is to check out your favourite products beforehand and then go for it.
