About Montblanc

Founded in 1906, Montblanc has since then become famous for its luxury writing products and accessories, including Montblanc glasses and sunglasses. Of course, many people associate the name at first with the highest peak in the Alps. But while the mountain is spelled Mont Blanc and means "white mountain" in French, we at Edel-Optics automatically think of Montblanc eyewear when the name comes up, a completely different kind of summit striker. Because while the granite mountain has been towering over Europe for quite some time, the Montblanc brand by no means needs to keep its head down. After all, it has had both feet firmly planted in its core business for more than 100 years and is one of the pioneers in its specialist field.

The Hamburg banker Alfred Nahemias and the Berlin engineer August Eberstein recognized the signs of the times at the beginning of the 20th century. Standing at the foot of the mountain, they were inspired by the strong influences of their generation and decided to produce fountain pens. Since the 1910s and 20s were the ideal time for inventors and craftsmen, they didn't have to be asked twice, but went straight to laying the foundation for what would become Montblanc, a globally successful company.

According to legend, the idea for the name came up during a card game when a relative of a business partner drew a creative comparison between the fountain pen as a peak in writing instrument culture and the Mont Blanc mountain as the majestic and highest peak in the Alps. The Montblanc logo was also inspired by this, which is why the rounded star symbolizes the snow-covered peak.

Montblanc History

The year 1924 is still considered a milestone in writing culture. The birth year of the Montblanc Meisterstück collection embodies their philosophy of continuity and timeless design down to the last inkblot. After that, nothing stood in the way of a steep ascent, so that by the end of the 1920s Montblanc was already a recognised label in over 60 countries. Above all, impressive advertising campaigns and the first planes for advertising, which quite literally helped the name "Montblanc" soar to new heights, ensured that the writing instrument manufacturer not only rose to become more than a familiar name in the business, but rather THE name.

Two years later, Montblanc upped the ante and opened its first leather goods workshop for luxury small leather goods, producing cases, pencil cases and the popular notebooks. A manufactory was bought out for this purpose. The location: Offenbach. A city world-famous for its leather craftsmanship.

In addition to expanding the range, Montblanc also increased its social commitment. Numerous international sponsorship projects in the fields of literature, music and ballet laid the foundation for their worldwide commitment to art and culture today.

The Montblanc boutiques were also opened worldwide, including the first store in Hong Kong in 1990. Success in the Asian market moved the company to enter the European market as well, initially in London and Paris. This step also marked the beginning of the company's international expansion. As of today, there are over 350 boutiques in more than 70 countries.

The success was not hidden from anyone in the industry, so the Luxembourg-based Vendôme Luxury Group also became aware of Montblanc and took over Dunhill Holding, which had acquired a large share of Mont blanc stock in the 1980s.

In the 1990s, Montblanc also entered the world of men's jewellery with the Masterpiece Jewelry Collection. Since 2001, Montblanc eyewear was produced by the Marcolin company under a licensing agreement until 2018, when the manufacturer Kering came into the picture. Montblanc's involvement in the watch sector followed in 2007, starting with an investment in the Swiss Minerva manufacture, which today generates significant profits. In 2010, the Swiss subsidiary Montblanc Montre SA set new standards in watchmaking with the Montblanc wristwatches.

Montblanc Eyewear

That the highest standards are only just good enough for Montblanc should not be surprising considering the history of the company. That's why the traditional company gives a lifetime guarantee on some of its products. The same approach comes through in Montblanc sunglasses and glasses, which are in the same league as its writing instruments, jewellery and other luxury accessories. The quality of Montblanc eyeglasses for men convinces on all levels. Rimless, semi-rimless and fullrim frames in a wide range of shapes and sizes ensure that there is the perfect pair of glasses to suit everyone's taste and style. As a general rule, those with more angular faces suit a round-frame and those with rounder faces suit square or rectangle frame glasses to add balance and harmony to the face. Subtle frame colours such as dark blue, havana brown and grey with gold and silver detailing are suitable for all occasions, from the office to the opera!
