Edel-Optics x Race of Champions

Only the best for the champs

“There is no other race like it. This is an opportunity
to race the best from around the world.” – Ryan Hunter-Reay

When the IndyCar champion says this about the legendary Race Of Champions (ROC), those around him have an approving look in their eyes. His opponents know exactly what he’s talking about, because they are the best he is referring to. They have been getting together regularly since back in 1988. World-class racers from major motorsport disciplines such as Formula 1, World Rally, RallyX, IndyCar, NASCAR and Le Mans meet up once a year in the world’s most exotic places to battle out on the race track who the World’s Greatest Driver is. Apart from the Race Of Champions individual race on the weekend, there is also the Nations Cup the day before, where Germany will be represented by the Race Of Champions dream team Sebastian Vettel and Mick Schumacher at the sporting event’s 30th anniversary in January 2019.

For this special anniversary, ROC founder Fredrik Johnsson came up with something special and made Edel-Optics the event’s official eyewear partner to properly celebrate the international event. For this reason, some of the Race Of Champions drivers will be equipped with sunglasses specially designed for this motorsport event. Although the strictly limited collection was designed to serve the race drivers at the showdown at Mexico City’s Foro Sol Stadium, i.e. this year’s Race Of Champions venue, both models will be available in two colour variations. The quantity is strictly limited to 100 sunglasses and not only popular with racing fans.

Fuel and spirit

You don’t need to have fuel in your blood to recognize the sporting spirit of the ROC Fan Edition Black. The black full-frame Race of Champions sunglasses are full of contrasts. On one hand they seem inconspicuous, while on the other hand standing out with their silver mirror lenses. But contrasts are not only created in terms of colour, the shape of the glasses also speaks several languages. With its rectangular shape, the design of the Race Of Champions Fan Edition initially appears simple, but then rounds off the frame towards the outer corners. A similar line was used in the design of the temples, which are wide and distinctive like on the Ray-Ban Wayfarer, but eventually smoothly arch towards the end and thus create a sporty dynamic. Race drivers like two-time champion David Coulthard would probably describe it as the “ideal line”.

Motor racing fans will appreciate the details of the Limited Edition. Holding this piece of racing history in their hands, they will not only see the Race Of Champions logo on the temples, but also the chequered flag, the ultimate racing symbol. There is no better way to present oneself as a motor sport enthusiast than with the limited Race Of Champions Fan Edition. And those drawn particularly to this unique racing event can opt for the alternative colour design of the ROC Limited Fan Edition Black Orange. It differs from the all-black model because of the orange colour on the inner side towards the end of the temples–hidden and subtle, but still a bit ROC-ier.

Home stretch in plain view, Carrera and Porsche Design in the rear view mirror

That Edel-Optics became the official eyewear partner of the Race Of Champions is no coincidence but the result of years of experience with sporty eyewear brands such as Carrera and Porsche. With the ROC Limited Edition Havanna Edel-Optics is now offering its own line of premium sporty sunglasses. These beautifully shaped sunglasses have no classic one-piece frame, but are connected by a golden metal nosepiece a brand like Persol is known for. In combination with the bright Havana brown and the gold mirror lenses, these limited sunglasses become an accessory the high society along the race track likes to show itself in. But just like the other Race Of Champions models, only 25 pairs will be available once launched. An alternative is the ROC Limited Edition havana orange, which stands out with the orange temple ends (like the ROC Fan Edition). The orange fits perfectly into the orange/brown Havana tone and the golden elements repeat themselves in a coordinated interaction between nose bridge and ROC Emblem.
